A 2024 song from an independent Arkansas band has received over two million streams

Buckshot Princess, a goth-country band from Little Rock, released their single “Animal Cannibal (Possibly in Michigan)” on March 15. The song is a goth-country adaptation of the music from Cecelia Condit’s 1983 short musical horror film “Possibly in Michigan.” The song has had over 2.1 million Spotify streams since it was released.

The song was originally introduced to their setlist as a way to pass the time at a show, according to vocalist Payton Marshall. However, when a video of the performance was made public online in February, the response was so overwhelming that they went straight to the studio to record it as a single.

Marshall remarked, “I thought ‘Some people might like this,’ even though it was just an upright cell phone video of terrible quality.” “After two weeks, it had thousands of likes, and people were leaving comments asking us to post it on streaming websites.”

After contacting Condit, the band was granted permission to record the song, which they then tracked at Little Rock’s Wolfman Studios. They failed to anticipate how rapidly it would gain traction, reaching over a million streams in just four months and surpassing the two million mark in December.

Marshall remarked, “It felt unreal because we had only been a band for maybe a year when we hit a million.” To put it simply, I feel extremely fortunate. I think using the internet is just stupid luck and the luck of the draw.

Even though their music has become extremely popular, guitarist Evan Peck stated that it hasn’t changed their daily schedule.
