Little Rock, Arkansas – When funding for extending the city’s trail network was announced, it was good news for outdoor enthusiasts in the Benton region.

The Metroplan Board has awarded the City of Benton’s Parks and Recreation Department a $400,000 CARTS 2022 Surface Transportation Program Block Grant, according to Stephanie Jones, Director of Parks and Recreation. The funds are intended to pay the city back for the engineering services provided for the Benton Belt’s Greenway Project segment.

The Benton Belt is a 13.5-mile path system that circles the city and connects to parks as well as neighboring cities that are scheduled to be connected. The Greenway Project is a 4.5-mile spur along the Saline River and Salt Creek that makes up the western portion of the belt.

The Saline River Greenway will be the name of the project when it is finished.

“We are excited to work towards connectivity within Benton and our parks system,” Jones said.

According to Jones, the parks department will provide $100,000 to the Metroplan funding.
