Lepanto, Arkansas – Local basketball legend succeeding on and off the court.

Free turkeys were given to community members for Thanksgiving. Saturday, Nov. 18, First Missionary Baptist Church hosted the Malik Monk Turkey Drive.

The initiative received 300 turkeys from Lepanto residents and Sacramento Kings shooting guard Malik Monk. He had donated to his hometown for the holidays for seven years, but Monk did not go.

His mother, Jackie Monk, was one of numerous family members that welcomed guests. She stated everyone knows his busy schedule and that basketball comes first for him.

“The community raised me,” Jackie said. “You know, that’s what he says.”

Jackie said she was extremely proud of her son and hoped he would keep helping others.

Pastor Larrie Bell praised the Monks. He likes seeing the grins every year.

“We are serving the public. It’s just a great wonderful feeling,” the pastor said. “It warms our hearts to know we can give back.”
