Arkansas-born NFL receiver and 1968 Olympic champion Jim Hines passed away at age 76
Arkansas – The 1968 Olympic 100-meter winner Jim Hines, who later played wide receiver in the NFL, passed away. He was 76.
Hines’ passing was reported by USA Track & Field on Saturday. The reason for death was not disclosed.
Hines, who was reared in Oakland, California, but was born in Arkansas, brought his talent to Texas Southern University, where he excelled right away. In a time that still stands today, 9.95 seconds, Hines won the 100 at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He also contributed to the 4×100 relay winning the gold.
Before Calvin Smith beat Hines’ 100-meter world record, it held for 15 years. Usain Bolt, a phenom from Jamaica, currently holds the record after clocking a time of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.
Hines played for the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs after his career in track. In 1969, he had two catches for Miami totaling 23 yards, as well as one kickoff return of 22 yards.
Hines worked with young people in Houston’s inner cities after his playing career, according to World Athletics. In 1979, he was honored with a spot in the national track and field hall of fame.
