Following an alleged cancer fraud plot, a former Arkansas police officer surrenders himself
Little Rock, Arkansas – On Monday, a former England, Arkansas, police officer handed himself in after being charged by the authorities with fabricating a cancer diagnosis.
The Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that Eric Caffey, a former England police sergeant, was taken into custody on two charges of theft of property, which are class D felonies.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office started looking into the matter on October 5 after learning that Caffey had been receiving thousands of dollars in donations under false pretenses of having cancer.
According to the Facebook post, investigators came to the conclusion that Caffey had lied and that schools had organized fundraisers to cover his medical costs.
After a warrant was acquired, Caffey was taken into custody and later released with a $2,500 bond.
