Lepanto, Arkansas – The 92nd Terrapin Derby was place on Saturday at Lepanto. It’s a turtle race, for those who don’t know.

Every year, the race attracts more participants than the year before.

According to Lepanto Fire Chief Eric McGhee, the purpose of the event is to raise money for the fire department’s equipment and training programs.

He talked about what it means to him to continue this custom.

“Everyone in Lepanto and the surrounding areas, they always look forward to coming,” said McGhee. “We just want to continue on the tradition and keep it going for all the upcoming children and everyone.”

The event’s fundraising target was $10,000, and 4,000–5,000 attendees were predicted.

The festival featured more than 60 merchants and at least 10 food trucks.

Without holding a large celebration, they continued the custom during COVID by organizing turtle races at the fire station.
