The first Black battalion fire chief in North Little Rock transitioned from performer to firefighter
North Little Rock, Arkansas – Ricky Cranford has risen to the rank of battalion chief, becoming the first Black firefighter to hold that position in North Little Rock.
“I am grateful to be here,” expressed Cranford. “I am grateful to work for this city, the department, and I love it.”
Before joining the firefighting profession, Cranford had originally envisioned a different career path.
“Prior to becoming a firefighter, I was an entertainer: dancer and singer,” recalled Cranford.
Although Cranford asserts he no longer possesses the dance moves or the voice, he did manage to leave an impression on some influential figures in the music industry.
Cranford even secured a role in a movie written by Prince called Graffiti Bridge.
“Myself and my two other buddies of mine were actually selected to be in that movie,” shared Cranford. “I was tickled to death and I was excited.”
Seeking a more stable career, Cranford decided to exchange the microphone for the firehose, and that is where he remains to this day.
Cranford now paves the way for other minorities aspiring to become firefighters. In summary, Cranford’s mantra is straightforward.
“The main thing is do not give up,” emphasized Cranford.
“If you really want to take pride in yourself in a career job, do not give up and hang in there. This is a great job to apply for.”
