Des Arc, Arkansas – The Prairie County sheriff, who acknowledged using racial epithets on occasion, is under renewed pressure to step down.

The Seventeenth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Reed McCoy wrote to Prairie County Sheriff Rick Hickman on Friday to request his retirement.

According to McCoy, prisoners who were being detained on felony warrants requiring bail were freed without having to post a bond or have a prosecutor’s office recommendation.

A man who was being held on a felony warrant, according to the prosecutor, was freed by Hickman in February. Days later, McCoy claimed that the freedman had murdered someone.

Hickman said that his office has already been addressing these concerns, noting that “We’re correcting the problem.”
