Dramatically, Arkansas defeats Tennessee, ranked #4
Fayetteville, Arkansas – At Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville on Saturday, Arkansas defeated No. 4 Tennessee 19–14 by controlling the time of possession and limiting errors.
For just the second time in six weeks, the Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) made their homecoming and contained the top-ranked scoring offense of the Volunteers in the first half. Tennessee had 565.8 yards and 54 points per game on average coming into the matchup.
In the first half of the game, Arkansas limited the Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) to only 77 yards, effectively shutting them out. The Hogs were unable to take advantage of the defense’s excellent play, though.
Arkansas’s opening possession resulted in a field goal from kicker Kyle Ramsey, but despite controlling the ball for 20:42 and amassing 221 yards, those were the only points scored by the team in the first half.
Tennessee, trailing 3-0 in the third quarter, began to mount a comeback. The Volunteers were ahead 7-3 after a 53-yard run by running back Dylan Sampson, the SEC’s leading scorer in rushing touchdowns, to start the second half.
With 8:18 remaining in the third quarter, Sampson again found the end zone four minutes later on a four-yard rush, putting Tennessee ahead 14-3.
In need of a change in momentum, Arkansas responded with a running back score from Ja’Quinden Jackson that was good for two yards. This completed an eight-play, 75-yard drive that brought the Volunteers’ lead down to 14-10.
With 12:06 remaining in the game, kicker Matthew Shipley’s 22-yard field goal during a Razorbacks drive down the field in the fourth quarter tied the score at 13 points.
Redshirt freshman Malachi Singleton led a game-winning drive after Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green was sidelined by an injury. Singleton ran 11 yards for a score to give the Hogs their first win over an AP Top 5 team since 2007.
After taking the next week off, Arkansas will play LSU at home on October 19. Details about the broadcast and kickoff time will be revealed later.
