Little Rock, Arkansas – One local non-profit is getting into the holiday spirit by offering free rides for older residents this December.

Starting this year CareLink is offering senior residents trips exclusively for holiday shopping.

“This is our first time doing it. We are really excited to offer it. We see a lot of these folks that are excited for Christmas just like everyone else is, but they may not be able to prepare like we are because of their limitations and so we’re excited to give them that opportunity,” CareLink, Vice President of Development, Michelle Gilbert said.

Care Link is a non-profit offering senior adults help including rides, year-round. Those transportation choices are normally restricted but this month they’re able to provide their holiday special.

“Here in Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Maumelle. It gives them a chance to go out and get some gifts for their grandkids or some food for holiday dinner and things like that. And just help everyone get in the holiday spirit,” Gilbert said.

Rides are first come first serve carrying individuals 60 and over to any retailer of their choice from December 18th through the 22nd.

They’re pushing the community to take advantage of this chance.

“So, a big part of health as we age is staying connected and a part of your community, being able to socialize and not just being homebound and not being able to participate in daily life and seeing other folks and so that is part of what CareLink does through our transportation program, through meals on wheels and a lot of our other services. We help keep seniors connected to their community which in turn keeps them healthy and able to live independently longer,” Gilbert said.

Carelink addressed the significance of considering the elderly during this time.

“As we go into the holiday season, I think it’s important to pay attention to our older loved ones as you spend a little bit more time together over the next few weeks. Be mindful of their needs and if they’re struggling with things around the house, please feel free to give us a call,” Gilbert said.

The deadline to preregister for Christmas shopping transportation is December 15th.

Liquor stores are excluded from eligible destinations.
