Arkansas law enforcement raises awareness to prevent distracted driving

Little Rock, Arkansas – State and local law enforcement agencies are collaborating to conduct a high-visibility enforcement operation this week in honor of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The Arkansas State Police (ASP) said that this week may see more state troopers on the road as part of a campaign to reduce distracted driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2021, distracted driving accidents resulted in 3,522 fatalities and 362,415 injuries.
“As far as texting and driving, if you look down for a brief second, that brief second can take you several hundred feet at times depending on your speed,” said Corporal Trey Keller, an ASP trooper. “Especially with the young drivers that causes crashes.”
Keller notes that it’s always safer to pull over before sending a text message, and that Bluetooth-enabled cars can provide choices for hands-free phone use.
